Blankenberge, Bruges, Gent and Brussels - September 2026

Day 1

I boarded a RyanAir flight from Manchester to Brussels, during the wait I got bored and decided to update my servers. I was SSHed into one and ran the upgrade all command. This took longer than anticipated but luckily it completed just before take off. I even rebooted it and it worked! Arrived into Bruges via CRL airport. This was not an easy airport to get from, with 1 bus, and 3 trains. I got into Bruges at around 2100, the walk to my hostel was nice. I saw my first taster of this beautiful medieval town.

Day 2

I took a river cruise tour, this was a 35 minute tour that was educational and elegant. I was sat in a middle seat so I had a good view of the forward, starboard and portside. After disembarking I headed to a nuneary namely the “Beguinage -Ten Wijngaerde". I didn’t come across any nuns but the church was lovely. On my way to said Nuneary I walked across Boniface Bridge. This bridge has a romantic reputation, unfortunately I had no padlock and the bridge has no railings so I was not able to mark my non existing love. Perhaps if I had a partner and a padlock I would of lobbed the lock into the canal with its key. Maybe that would of had the same impact ? I then walked for a bit and ended up at the Basilica of the Holy Blood, this place makes the claim it has a vile of blood originating from Jesus. At around 1500 I went up the Belfry of Bruges, a €16 tower climb experience. At around 1730 I attended a Church of England service for communion, the service was in English to.

Day 3

On day 3 I explored Gent for a bit, visiting a castle, taking a boat tour and also visiting the local cathedral. Upon exiting the station, I was almost ran over by a lady failing to check her rear view mirror. I had to jump out the way pretty quickly as she reversed quick herself. After this I visited a place called Graffiti street, it was an interesting sight. At around 1700 I decided I wanted to sea the beach, looking at local maps I found a place called Blankenberge, so I took the train and went for a pleasant beach walk.
