Germany Travel Log
Cologne, Bochum, Wuppertal & Bacharach
I arrived in Cologne around 1030 and got my train to the city centre. My first port of call was the Cathedral. It was nice to see and rather expensive for €12. Later in the evening I went to a jazz club I had seen earlier that day. I befriended an older German gentlemen and we bonded over our love for rock music. After I mentioned the Rolling Stones he jokingly explained how when you reverse “Sympathy for the devil” it sounds like a ritual for Satan. After this joke he told me he was a Freemason and we discussed this at length. He was a rather interesting guy! I drunkenly made my way back to Köln HBF and successfully got back to my hotel at Wahn.

Day 2 - Bochum & Wuppertal
For several years I have played on a game server with a friend who is from Germany. As I was “in town for the weekend” I suggested we meet up. We did meet up and it was an absolute pleasure. I took the train from Köln HBF to Bochum. We met at Bochum station and went for a coffee, then got the bus back to her university. We chilled for a bit then departed for Wuppertal, as during an earlier conversation I mentioned I may go to Wuppertal to attend one of the best rave clubs in the world. As she was going Wuppertal anyway she offered to drop me off. I decided not to go to this club due to the nightmare logistics of returning home in the evening. During the walk to the car I noticed a shop brand called Netto, this excited me quite a lot as Netto was the butt of several jokes during my childhood. I went to Wuppertal anyway, and when we were driving into Wuppertal I noticed an overhead rail system. I postponed my departure from Wuppertal to explore this beautiful railway. This was a great day, I woke up to the news I got a 2.1 in my degree and I met a long term friend who didn’t end up chopping me up.

Day 3 - Bacharach
I was in possession of a DB only rail pass, so my planning was limited unless I wanted to pay extra for a non DB train. As I did not want to pay extra I picked a random village from a map that is served by DB and also is on the Rhine. I picked Bacharach. Bacharach was a good choice. It is remote, and has a lot of natural beauty. The town is a picturesque medieval style town with a castle and a few towers. It took a few hours to explore the town. I’d definitely return here for weekend in the future.

Day 4 - Cologne
On my travels I do like some history, so I planned to go to a world war 2 museum called “NS-Documentation Center of the City of Cologne”. I discovered it was closed. Prior to this I went to a restaurant/pub. It was interesting to say the least. Would absolutely recommend. (See image) As my planned museum was closed I went to a communications tower in the distance, it was closed. So I went to a niche shop. It was closed. In the end my Cologne day consisted of a few churches, a massive mosque and some eateries. I walked 14.5 miles just exploring the city and enjoying the vibes. During my walk I came across two massive golden doors. I was really curious about what was inside and I found it to be an empty Adult entertainment venue. I left and continued my explorations.
